Botswana has Ratified the Maputo Protocol!

1st December, 2023 The Republic of Botswana has ratified the Protocol to the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights on the Rights of Women in Africa (better known as the Maputo Protocol). The SOAWR Coalition congratulates the Government of Botswana on this momentous achievement in the year of the 20th Anniversary of the Maputo Protocol. Botswana deposited the instrument of ratification to the African Union Commission on the 1st of December, 2023. Until now, Botswana had previously been one of just three African Union Member States who had neither signed or ratified the African women’s rights treaty, alongside Egypt

Botswana

Botswana is the longest African multi-party democracy. However, although it has ratified CEDAW on 13 August 1996, it has not yet ratified the Maputo Protocol due to concerns about SRHR. Some of the advances with regards to gender equality in the past years are:  2015 National Policy on Gender and Development[i]: Is accompanied by a National Operational Plan,[ii] prioritizes actions to remedy the gaps of women’s participation in political life.[iii]  2016  Establishment of the National Gender Commission: Monitors the implementation of the 2015 National Policy on Gender and Development[iv]  2017 National Development Plan 11[v]: Promotes the elimination of GBV, focus
