The Maputo Protocol is now available in Zarma and Hausa

Through the All for Maputo Protocol Initiative, supported by Sida and Equality Now, SOAWR member Réseau des Femmes Leaders pour le Développement (RFLD) has translated the Maputo Protocol into the languages of Hausa and Zarma. Hausa is a language spoken by the Hausa people in Chad, and mainly within the northern half of Nigeria, Ghana, Cameroon, and the southern half of Niger, with significant minorities in Sudan, Benin and Côte d’Ivoire. Chad

Chad signed the Protocol to the African Charter on Human and Peoples’  Rights on the Rights of Women in Africa (The Maputo Protocol) on the 6th of December 2004 but has not ratified it. Women remain largely discriminated against in Chad. Although the constitution provides equal rights for all citizens, in practice, there is a big inequality between men and women. Despite the government efforts to promote gender equality, women are still underrepresented in government and decision-making positions.
