Today, the 25th of May, marks the 49th anniversary of the signing of the OAU (Organization of African Unity) agreements which evolved into the present day African Union (AU). This year’s Africa Day celebration is centred on nutrition, with the African Union Theme for the year 2022 “Strengthening Resilience in Nutrition and Food Security on the African Continent”. The SOAWR Coalition celebrates that 43 out of the 55 AU Member States have enshrined African women’s right to nutrition and food security by ratifying the Maputo Protocol. Read an extract below. “The Strategic Initiative for Women in the Horn of Africa (SIHA Network) was created by women activists from Somalia, Somaliland, Ethiopia, Sudan, South Sudan and Eritrea in the mid-1990s. For the past 25 years we have held a unique position working as a feminist regional civil society network operating in the politically volatile contexts of the Greater Horn of Africa. We work through and firmly believe in the collective power of African women.

Previous Next The African Union has announced that the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic has ratified the Protocol to the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights on the Rights of Women in Africa (Maputo Protocol). This increases the total ratifications from 42 to 43 out of 55 AU member states.
