PEOPLE OPPOSING WOMEN’S ABUSE (POWA)

People Opposing Women Abuse (POWA) is an organisation started 40 years ago by 6 women who volunteered to provide referral services and sheltering to women who had experienced domestic violence.

Today, we are an organisation that continues to provide sheltering for abused women and other frontline services such as counselling. We have also expanded our services to include legal and advocacy support. More importantly, we are an organisation that has transformed its ideology that frames us as a women’s rights organisation engaging in policy reform and developmental addressing socio-economic and socio-political issues that affect women’s livelihoods.

As an organisation, our aim is to ‘open spaces for us as women in all our diversity to enjoy our fundamental human rights.’

In order to achieve our goals, we have set out various objectives that respond to women’s needs from a psycho-social and socio-economic and political perspective.

We aim to: Work towards the elimination of violence against women and children through frontline services, lobbying, advocacy and research
